Planet Mercury| Space School

Ice has been found on Mercury! What's the climate like? What about the atmosphere itself? Could there be life? Learn more here!

As excited as we are, some of us at Science Channel needed a bit of a refresher on all-things Mercury so we dug up this great clip from Space School. Enjoy!

The Planer Mercury

Mercury is the innermost planet in the Solar System. It is also the smallest, and its orbit is the most eccentric of the eight planets. It orbits the Sun once in about 88 Earth days, completing three rotations about its axis for every two orbits. The planet is named after the Roman god Mercury, the messenger to the gods. Mercury is one of four terrestrial planets in the Solar System, and is a rocky body like the Earth. It is the smallest planet but it is more massive. Mercury consists of approximately 70% metallic and 30% silicate material. Mercury's core has a higher iron content than that of any other major planet in the Solar System. Mercury's surface is very similar in appearance to that of the Moon. The surface temperature of Mercury ranges from 100 K to 700 K. Mercury has a significant, and apparently global, magnetic field. According to measurements taken by Mariner 10, it is about 1.1% as strong as the Earth's. Mercury has the most eccentric orbit of all the planets; its eccentricity is 0.21 with its distance from the Sun. There is no natural satellite for mercury and also mercury does not have any human made satellite, because Mercury is closest to the sun.

Mercury is made up of three main layers. The crust, the mantle and the large iron core.

Discover The Unknow Secrets

The Solar System consists of the Sun and those celestial objects bound to it by gravity, all of which were formed from the collapse of a giant molecular cloud  approximately 4.6 billion years ago. Of the many objects that orbit the Sun, most of the mass is contained within eight relatively solitary planets whose
orbits are almost circular and lie within a nearly flat disc called the ecliptic plane. The four outer planets, the gas giants, are substantially more massive than the terrestrials. The two largest, Jupiter and Saturn, are composed mainly of hydrogen and helium; the two outermost planets, Uranus and Neptune, are composed largely of ices, such as water, ammonia and methane, and are often referred to separately as "ice giants".
